 MEDIATION TRAINING INFORMATION

The courses conducted by Private Dispute Resolution Services will provide participants with the skills and tools needed to be effective mediators. Mediation courses meet the standards of the Professional Mediation Association and meet the qualification requirements for approval under TN Supreme Court Rule 31 (Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission) and the Mediation Association of Tennessee ("MAT").

These Mediation courses provide extensive training in conflict resolution and communication skills. Participants will learn both theory and practical application through lecture, exercises and role-playing. Emphasis is on the process of mediation, the development of mediation techniques and skills and TN law as it relates to mediation.

This comprehensive program is taught by a team of highly skilled trainers with expertise in the spectrum of mediation models. The program is based on a facilitative or collaborative model of mediation which empowers the parties to make their own decisions. Participants (attorneys and non attorneys) will learn:

    * negotiation and mediation skills
    * TN law as it relates to mediation
    * communication skills
    * active listening skills
    * how to deal with conflict
    * how to differentiate between interest and needs
    * how to ask non adversarial questions
    * how to reach a negotiated agreement
    * how to mediate conflict
    * how to write a mediation agreement

By the end of the course, you will develop enhanced listening and communication skills that can be used in all parts of your life including negotiation skills to resolve conflicts in the family, at work and with friends. You will also be prepared to mediate cases in the private sector and the courts and will meet the training requirements to be an approved mediator in Tennessee and elsewhere.
